OUR STORY

                       (THE LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE)

This old building that we are proud to call our restaurant was once Matherville Elementary School. The school began in 1891 and was originally built by Dr. Thad L. Mathers, for his two oldest children. Mrs. Lucy Trotter was the first teacher in Matherville. Her salary was $15.00 a month for room and board. It was a one room school house built of heart pine lumber. Several years later the children were transported to Shubuta. The Community of Matherville decided to revive the old school in 1947. Mrs. Bessie Reynolds was hired as teacher. In 1949, the oil rights of the sixteenth section were released and the school was “put on its feet” financially.  The building was remodeled and new furnishings were bought along with some playground equipment. The building got new ranch red siding and ashy black roof. The school was permanently closed in 1956.

I was born and raised in the small community of Matherville. My Grandfather, Arthur Odom was a student here. As well as several other of my relatives.  Art's, as it is called now has been a restaurant for over 30 years. When it became available for purchase we jumped right in. Since I am older and more appreciative of the history of our little community I would be devastated at the thought of the building being torn down or vacant.  So if the floors squeak a little, or the walls aren’t quite square, just remember the hard labor that went into this building long ago. Oh, the stories that could be told of the Little Red School House and the community of Matherville. When you visit check out the archives around the restaurant.

Ron and Danyale Beasley, the proud owners of Art’s Steakhouse and Cafe welcome you, friends, family, guest, and neighbors. So come on in, sit back, relax and enjoy some delicious food!
